Transforming Streets in Antofagasta

Streets for Kids in Villa Las Condes
Implemented by Ciudad Emergente and Creo Antofagasta

In March 2023, the Villa Las Condes sector in Antofagasta experienced a significant improvement in the quality of life for students and families. Road markings, signage, barriers, playful paint designs, furniture, and shaded areas were some of the changes brought about by the tactical urbanism project “Streets for Children – Villa Las Condes.” This initiative aimed to enhance pedestrian safety in the area and collect data to inform the final design, tailored to the urban needs of the territory. The project was carried out with the participation of the local educational and territorial community of Villa Las Condes.

With Creo Antofagasta

The primary goal of this pilot was to strengthen and promote social bonds through community activation and collaboration, ensuring safer pedestrian and vehicular mobility. Additionally, it sought to enhance the organizational skills of the local school community and foster new connections between students and neighbors, highlighting the value of neighborhood life through actions that activate public spaces.

With Ciudad Emergente

This initiative also served as a pilot project to collect qualitative and quantitative data for future integration into the design of the “between schools” area, covering the intersections of Sin Nombre Street, Abraham Lincoln, and Vicente Zegers, near the Japón and Santiago Amengual schools.

The intervention activated public space usage through the dissemination of methodologies and tactical urbanism interventions, promoting public spaces as a common good and as venues for socio-cultural and environmental expression. The project also tested the functionality of temporary installations in areas slated for future permanent PCM projects.

Results and Impact: The findings from this intervention will inform the definitive PCM Sidewalks Project, enabling a more accurate design that meets the community's needs. Furthermore, this pilot project contributed to strengthening social bonds and community collaboration in the area, fostering new relationships between students and neighbors and emphasizing the importance of neighborhood life through actions that bring public spaces to life.
