Adopt-a-Tree

Adopt-a-Tree is a tool designed to promote environmental stewardship and the revitalization of everyday neighborhood spaces through community-led urban forestry.

What does it measure?

  • The level of commitment and co-responsibility of residents regarding their neighborhood's green infrastructure. It identifies the community's willingness to actively participate in improving the environmental conditions of their daily surroundings.

The Insight

  • This tool ensures a higher survival rate for urban vegetation, as each tree remains under the direct care of a local steward. Beyond the number of specimens planted, the primary outcome is a strengthened sense of belonging and the creation of a network of environmental guardians who protect and value the neighborhood’s natural heritage.

How is it applied?

  • Through strategic partnerships (e.g., with national forestry agencies like CONAF), a donation of native or climate-appropriate tree species is secured. Neighbors are invited to "adopt" a tree, formalizing a commitment to its care and maintenance. Finally, a collective planting day is organized where the adopters, alongside volunteers, plant the trees in public spaces or shared community areas.
